Candidacy
The next generation of the ELCA’s professional leaders are identified, nurtured, and encouraged by partners across the church through a process called Candidacy. The process is administered by a Candidacy Committee in each synod and includes the churchwide organization, synods and bishops, seminaries, congregations, and candidates.
In SEPA Synod, the Candidacy Committee and the Assistant to the Bishop for Formation prayerfully consider, prepare, and certify Ministers of Word and Sacrament (pastors) and Ministers of Word and Service (deacons and deaconesses) for ministry in the ELCA.
Starting in 2026, SEPA Synod's Candidacy Committee is testing a new Candidacy manual through the ELCA's Reimagined Candidacy launch process.
